Publishing
sees positive, negative
changes
The changing newspaper industry reveals some positives to go
along with well known negatives
On the positive side, values remain upbeat for strong weekly and
small daily newspapers, shoppers and specialty publications in solid
markets .
We all
know that is not true for daily newspapers in major cities, as well
as small weeklies and small dailies in declining markets that are
not profitable and not growing.
Revenue in some of these newspapers as well as
most media is temporarily affected by the present short term
economic situation such as declining real estate and auto
advertising. This is temporary and it generally does not hurt
circulation and market penetration.
Advertising across the board is down today due to present
economic conditions. Internet advertising revenue also is expected
to decline through next year, according to New York research firm
EMarketer, Inc.
The buying and selling market nationwide has been expected to
change over the next few years due to the retirement of baby
boomers, but we haven’t seen much impact yet. It could be that some
retirement age people have decided to delay
retirement .
